Contemporary Farm House
The exterior of this new farm house has a traditional feel, but the interior has an updated, open plan with generous living spaces, large, south-facing windows, and tall ceilings.
To create comfortably scaled but open rooms, custom built-ins and finish details such as wood-wrapped beams and columns were designed to delineate spaces. These features not only help define each room, they add visual interest, and sometimes double as storage or display space.
The kitchen is the hub of the house and much attention was paid to its details and functionality. At the center, is a multi-purpose island that serves as prep space, eating area, or buffet. Taller items like the refrigerator and a walk-in pantry are tucked off to the north side of the room, freeing up the south exterior wall for windows and open work space. A screened porch, used as a warm weather dining room, is right off the kitchen. With no deadends, this room easily accommodates two cooks, kids, and guests.
Exterior materials such as aluminum-clad windows, cement board siding and standing seam metal roofing were chosen for their long life and low maintenance. Inside, local woods–brown maple flooring and cherry kitchen cabinets–add warmth and texture.
