Cottage for Two

This elegantly simple, new cottage sits in a clearing in the woods overlooking the Champlain Valley and Adirondak Mountains. Though small, the house’s open, well-organized plan makes it feel roomy.

Warm wood floors and antique, salvaged doors and timbers add character and texture to the spaces.

The first floor living spaces are housed in a large rectangle, the main volume of the house. To the south, a smaller, single story volume houses a master bedroom suite and laundry. First floor-only living is made possilbe, if needed, by having all the necessary functions on one level. Two bedrooms and a bath are tucked under the sloped roof lines on the second floor, giving the upper level an intimate and cozy feel.

This project was completed by Elizabeth Herrmann during her tenure at Heaton + Herrmann Architects.
