ELIZABETH HERRMANN ARCHITECTURE + DESIGN
is an award winning residential architecture firm based in central Vermont specializing in new, remodeling, and historic renovation projects. We design homes of character and distinction to fit the lifestyles, aspirations, and resources of diverse clients throughout the region. Our commitment is to design beautiful homes that function well, meet everyday needs, and have enduring quality, comfort, and style.
We offer a full range of services tailored to each client–from early planning, site selection and design (rough sketches to construction-ready drawings), to helping clients obtain permits and choose the right builder. We guide clients through technical details, interior and exterior finishes, kitchen and bath design, lighting, as well as fixture and fitting selection. We oversee construction and coordinate among many specialized professionals and artisans to bring projects to fruition.

EHA+D works with clients to incorporate healthy, green or low-maintenance building materials in their projects, meet energy-efficiency goals, or employ sustainable practices.  For clients desiring certification in a particular program, we’ll lead and manage the process.  Our firm is a member of Efficiency Vermont’s Efficiency Excellence Network, a prequalified group of professionals committed to providing the highest level of energy efficiency services to our clients.

We are well-versed in universal and adaptable design, taking care to gracefully integrate or plan for features that aid in mobility, access, or aging in place.

The firm’s founder and president, ELIZABETH HERRMANN, AIA, NCARB, LEED Green Associate, holds a professional degree in architecture (BArch) from Cornell University (Ithaca, NY and Rome, Italy) where she was awarded both the Charles Goodwin Sands Memorial Medal and Downing Prize for her work.  She brings 25+ years of residential and commercial architectural experience and historic preservation to the practice from working at firms in Vermont, San Francisco, Minneapolis and abroad.  She has served as a guest critic for the University of Massachusetts Amherst’s Architecture + Design Program, Norwich Univeristy’s Architecture school, and for Middlebury College’s architecture program, and has taught at the University of Minnesota.  She is a licensed architect in Vermont, Minnesota, New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Pennsylvania. She’s also a member of the American Institute of Architects, Vermont Green Building Association, and Building for Social Responsibility.  She was the Cameron Visiting Architect at Middlebury College in March ’19, and is a member of Efficiency Vermont’s Efficiency Excellence Network.

ALEXANDER TERRY became a team member in August 2020 after receiving his Masters in Architecture from Cornell University.  While in school he studied the embedded and projected anxieties of university students, and experimented with novelty architectural systems that encourage self-reflection and exposure to nature in an effort to alleviate stress.  While working for Cornell’s Robotic Construction Lab (RCL) and HANNAH Alex specialized in digital fabrication methods including 6-axis wood milling and concrete 3D-printing.  His prior professional experience includes working on custom residential and educational buildings.

VANILLE FRICKER joined EHA+D in January 2022.  After graduating from Cornell University with a Bachelor in Architecture, she worked in multi and single-family residential design in Massachusetts and Vermont.  Her interests range from material sustainability to spatial ergonomics and the symbiosis between space and inhabitant.  Her thesis was an exploration into housing that is 100% biodegradable or recyclable/reusable.  Prior to choosing a path in residential architecture she gained experience in a variety of architectural typologies including schools, university buildings, medical facilities, and landscape design.

CHRIS RAY joined EHA+D in January of 2024.  After receiving his Masters in Architecture from Cornell University in 2015, he began work in San Francisco with a focus on both educational and mixed-use residential design.  This work led to eight years of experience in high-rise construction and the opportunity to live in Honolulu.  While in Hawaii, he was an active member of the AIA, a guest critic at the University of Hawaii, Manoa, and a part owner of the Punt Wine Provisions.  He, and his family, returned to the East Coast in 2024.  Prior to professional Architecture he graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, served as a US Naval Surface Warfare Officer, and climbed Mount Kilimanjaro.
